SYLLABUS
General
Information
Course Schedule
This syllabus and course
schedule is subject to change.
The Basics
Class Meetings: MWF 1:00-1:50 (CA 146)
Class Limit: 50
Credits: 3
Office Hours: Monday 2pm-4pm, Friday 10am-11am or by appointment
Course Description
This course has two main goals. The first is to introduce students
to the six main elements of music: melody, harmony, dynamics, timbre,
texture and form. The second is to examine the role of music in society.
We will listen to a diverse range of music from "classical," "sacred" and
"popular" traditions around the world.
Prior knowledge of musical notation is not expected. Students
with extensive knowledge of the elements of music should not take this
course.
E-mail Requirement and Course Web Page
Students in this class are required to provide the instructor with
an e-mail address that you check at least twice a week. Students
in this class are also required to check the course web page at least once
a week. Links to updated portions of the course web page are located
at

An Active-Listening Approach. Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2001.
Workload
I expect three hours of work per week per credit you receive.
Since this is a three-credit class, I expect an average of nine hours of
work per week. Three of these will be class time. Of the remaining
six, three should be spent on the weekly listening assignment and journal
entry, and two should be spent on the reading assignments. In the
remaining time, you are expected to prepare for tests and for the group
presentation that is scheduled during the last two weeks of class.
